Shri Amalapuram Kanna Rao is one of the well talented artists in giving vocal support to the traditional dance ballets of Andhra Pradesh. Melodious voice; sound knowledge in classical music, literature, mythologies and ethics; clarity in pronunciation with modulation are his assets. Having proper understanding of different emotions of the characters acting on the stage, his expertise in rendering his vocal support gives life and thus elevates the scene, resulting into high quality of the performance.

Born in the year 1949 in Salur, Vizianagaram District in a salivahana family, to Smt. Amalapuram Chinnammi and Shri Suryanarayana, Shri Kanna Rao learnt the fundamentals in Carnatic Classical Music in Sri Sarada Gana Pathasala in his native town at the age of eight years. Under the guidance of Shri kabir Shah, a famous musician in Salur, he emerged as a professional light music singer as well as a theatre artist in a short period. While performing his duties as Scientific Officer in Nuclear Fuel Complex, Hyderabad, Shri Rao continued to learn classical music under the guidance of Shri Garimella Narasimha Rao up to diploma syllabus level and acquired skills in versatile vocal music.

Shri Rao is an approved vocal artist and writer for All India Radio and Doordarshan in Hyderabad. Two of his scripts presented through T.V. and A.I.R. are " Sri Krishna Chathuryam" and "Sri Krishna Kuchela" for which he composed music besides directing and playing the main role. He has also published the lyrics written by him under the title "Oohala Pallaki". He has also been lending his voice as vocal artist to Kuchipudi Art Academy lead by famous Kuchipudi Dance Exponent Padmashri Dr. Sobha Naidu since 15 years and participated in their stage performances world wide. Shri Rao was invited by the "Telugu Association of North America (TANA)" in the year 1987 to take part in the World Telugu Conference and he gave more than 30 stage performances , covering all main centers from New York to Los Angeles. He also participated in the Festival of India’s South, held in London in 1996 and again visited USA to participate in ATA conferences along with Dr. Sobha Naidu.

Shri Kanna Rao composed music for the dance ballets "Telugu Velugulu" and "Chalukya Vaibhavam" and lent his voice also at the request of Department of Culture, Government of Andhra Pradesh. He has also composed music and added his melodious voice for the popular poetry of Karunasri, Dr.Nanduru Ramakrishnamacharyulu and several other famous writers and got appreciation from class and mass.

Shri Kanna Rao, an ardent fan of Ghantasala, is well known to all the music lovers in the capital of Andhra Pradesh as a singer of "Ghantasala‘s melodies" with his golden voice in most of the private and public cultural programs held in the twin cities. In recognition of his special works on late Shri Gantasala’s melodies, he was honored with "Ghantasala Ratna Gold Medal" in the year 2000 by ‘Raga Sapthaswaram’ Hyderabad, which was presented by the Telugu Silver Screen Idol Dr. Akkineni Nageswara Rao. Again in the year 2001 Shri Kanna Rao conducted Ghantasala Gana Yagnam, a unique programme, by presenting a marathon music concert for 12 ½ hours non-stop, singing around 150 solo and duet songs of Ghantasala for which he was honored with the title "Madhura Gayaka Mouli" by Raga Saptha swaram.
